On this Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day 2010, we reflect back on the past year’s work around HIV/AIDS and women in the United States. The rate of HIV among women and girls has been steadily increasing over the years.

This NASTAD event was an extremely enlightening and encouraging sign that though the statistics are staggering for women and HIV/AIDS, stakeholders (including the White House) are committed to prevention efforts and education.

The statistics, indeed, are sobering. Today, a group of dedicated women at Davidson College began to make a difference. The women of Warner Hall Eating House at Davidson College sent an email to all female students and faculty, reminding them of the statistics stated in your blog. This simple act - a simple email - may not change the world. But this simple act may start conversations among women in our community, conversations that need to occur.

Count me in! We must educate our young women on the dangers of HIV, and that the epidemic is not over. They don't remember the messages of the 80s! Too many young women are becoming HIV+ and while treatment has come a long way it is expensive and chronic.
