Since the release of the National HIV/AIDS Strategy, AIDS United has been at the forefront of cultivating significant public and private investments in its programs that advance real-time implementation of the National HIV/AIDS Strategy. Since 2010, AIDS United has secured support for its Access to Care initiative through partnerships with Bristol-Myers Squibb, the Social Innovation Fund (SIF), MAC AIDS Fund, the Elton John AIDS Foundation, Ford Foundation, Johnson & Johnson, Chevron, Walmart Foundation, Broadway Cares/Equity Fight AIDS and Walgreens. These investors have committed millions of dollars to AIDS United’s community-driven programs that help people living with HIV/AIDS in our country's most vulnerable populations access the life-saving HIV/AIDS care and support services that they need and deserve. The investments are pivotal in supporting the goals of the Increasing the Access to Care pillar of NHAS and represent the largest private effort to date to move forward this particular pillar.

In 2010, Bristol-Myers Squibb's multimillion-dollar, multiyear investment was the private-sector catalyst for AIDS United’s unprecedented focus on reducing societal and structural barriers to HIV care, supporting the work of five communities highly affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The Walmart Foundation also stepped up soon after as a key private-sector investor, allowing AIDS United to include two other highly impacted communities in its access-to-care portfolio.

And it was the $3.6 million public-sector investment of the Social Innovation Fund that has helped forge a true public-private partnership between all Access to Care funding partners, significantly expanding the scope of the entire initiative. In February, ten U.S. communities received a combined $2.7 million to develop innovative collaborative programs to improve individual health outcomes and strengthen local services systems, connecting economically and socially marginalized individuals living with HIV to high-quality support services and health care. This particular initiative also focuses on developing new and innovative solutions to long-standing problems related to barriers to care.

As the largest infusion of non-HIV/AIDS-specific funds into the field in years, these SIF dollars, combined with AIDS United’s other Access to Care resources, promise to deliver a renewed sense of urgency in support of innovative, community-driven interventions reflected in and supported by the Increasing Access to Care pillar of the National HIV/AIDS Strategy.
