Recently, I had the opportunity to visit with Ambassador-at-Large and Coordinator of U.S. Government Activities to Combat HIV/AIDS Deborah L. Birx, M.D., to talk about her priorities for the U.S. President’s Emergency Program for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the U.S. Government initiative to help save the lives of those suffering from HIV/AIDS around the world. Watch our brief conversation below.
Ambassador Birx discussed three key priorities for PEPFAR: impact analysis, accountability, and transparency. Through these efforts, PEPFAR seeks to sustain and strengthen its track record of impressive outcomes and demonstrate that it is helping to change the trajectory of the global HIV/AIDS pandemic. Ambassador Birx pointed to the new PEPFAR Dashboards as an important tool in these efforts. The goal of the PEPFAR Dashboards is to enable all stakeholders, including U.S. citizens, civil society organizations, U.S. government agencies, donors, and host-country governments, to view and utilize PEPFAR planned budgets, program results, and expenditure analysis data in an accessible and easy-to-use format. Transparency is a priority for PEPFAR and the PEPFAR Dashboards provide unprecedented access to program data and illustrate the impact of PEPFAR programs.
