Speakers Announced for June 20 Listening Session on PrEP

PrEP webinar - man with pill - cropped May 2016Fourteen organizations will provide comments on HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) during a community listening session next Monday, June 20, 2016 hosted by the HHS Office of HIV/AIDS and Infectious Disease Policy (OHAIDP), the White House Office of National AIDS Policy, and the HHS Office of Minority Health.  The session will be conducted via webinar Exit Disclaimer from 1:30-3:00 pm (EDT) and is open to the public.

Diverse Organizations to Share Ideas about Expanding PrEP Access and Uptake

In response to a call for speakers, leaders from a variety of organizations from across the nation registered on a first-come first-served basis to share their recommendations around best practices and strategies to improve access to PrEP, the potential roles of diverse stakeholders, and priority actions for strengthening the PrEP delivery systems.  We were not able to accommodate all of the groups that asked to provide comments. Those that did not respond before the slots were filled were invited to provide written comments that will be shared with the members of the federal interagency workgroups addressing PrEP. Individuals from these 14 organizations will deliver comments (listed in order that request to speak was received):

  1. NMAC
  2. Men’s Health Foundation
  3. HIVE
  4. Philadelphia Department of Public Health
  5. National Association of County & City Health Officials
  6. Project Inform
  7. Gay City Health Project
  8. AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin
  9. U.S. Women and PrEP Working Group
  10. Metro Wellness and Community Centers
  11. Pacific AIDS Education and Training Center
  12. National Alliance of State and Territorial AIDS Directors

PrEP is a powerful HIV prevention tool — a daily pill people at high risk of getting HIV can take to protect themselves from HIV.  More than one million American adults could benefit from PrEP, a biomedical intervention that is more than 90% effective according to clinical trials.

The National HIV/AIDS Strategy: Updated to 2020 calls for full access to comprehensive PrEP services for those whom it is appropriate and desired as one of four key approaches to achieving the goals set forth in the updated plan.  Efforts to improve access to PrEP and scale PrEP delivery are currently underway in many locations across the United States.

We look forward to the listening session on June 20 and continuing to collaborate as we all work to achieve the goals of the National HIV/AIDS Strategy.
